Around fifty automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Automobiles, walls and postal boxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they stated in a statement.
Officers say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish liquid.
The substance had been drawn in the pattern of a banned symbol, they reported.
Officers then found numerous other vandalized vehicles and house walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement state preliminary tests show the substance was probably human blood.
"At present there remains no clue as to its source; investigators are currently not cognizant of any harm in association with the occurrence," they commented.
Local authorities stated they were trying "to unravel the incident" and have appealed to the public for tips.
An important official stated the vandalism left him without words and required to be solved promptly.
"This act strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the right-wing attack in 2020," he stated on online, referring to the death of nine victims by a shooter targeting individuals of migrant background in February 2020.
